FROM THE OFFICE

DEAR KAHOA FAMILIES:

C:\Documents and Settings\rreckew\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\MFD83ACG\MCj00786240000[1].wmfAfter nearly two months of recovering from two knee surgeries, I have been cleared to return to work full time! It may have been two of the most difficult months of my career. I desperately missed the children and staff and really enjoy being back amongst them. I know that I still have much work to do to fully rehabilitate the knee but it is becoming strong enough for me to be on duty most of each day. There may be times after physical therapy or on days where I’m on it too much that I’ll have to adjust my schedule but for the most part I’ll be here. I want to thank the Kahoa Staff, and Dr. Wendy Badje in particular, for their stepping in for me while I was absent. I thought they did a tremendous job keeping things running smoothly.  I’m excited to be back and thrilled to be working with the best staff, students, and families in Lincoln. Thanks for all of your patience and support!

Mr. Reckewey

LOST & FOUND

Thanks to everyone who "donated" to lost and found.  The items were taken by Girl Scout Troop #113 and given to the Foster Care Closet.  We appreciate the time they took to give to others.

TRANSPORTATION TO ABBOTT INFO

We had a very good turnout for the transportation to Abbott meeting on Feb. 16th. Lots of information was shared and questioned answered.  Here is a short summary of some of the main points.

  • There was a presentation by Bill McCoy, Director of LPS Transportation Services.
  • He shared the safety aspects of the LPS busing program.
  • He also distributed copies of a “Tentative Schedule or Working Draft Subject to change” that outlined when and where different buses would pick up the children in the neighborhood.*
  • Children riding the bus would need to sign an application with LPS for their child to ride the bus.
  • We discussed “Permit buses,” they are buses that will transport children to Abbott who attend Kahoa on permit. One bus would be located at Rosemont Church at 2600 N. 70th Street. Another location is still being negotiated.
  • This “Permit bus location at Rosemont will also be the pick-up place for the early chorus, band, and strings players.
  • There is a possible second location pick up at the Northeast YMCA for chorus, band and strings players that attend "Adventure Club" (more information will be available later).
  • Buses both pick-up students and take them to school and will then deliver students back to their bus stop after school.
  • Parents were encouraged to help student understand the rules and regulations of riding the bus because of safety purposes.
  • Parents are allowed to drive their children to and from Abbott School. Their traffic pattern will be apart from the buses.
  • Dismissal after school to the buses will not be a “free-for-all.” Staff will have students organized to get children on the correct buses.
  • School times will be adjusted so that school starts at 9:10 am and dismisses at 3:48 pm. This will help with transportation.
  • Expect the first couple of weeks for buses to run slower than usual. As time goes on the schedule runs smoother.
  • *There will be a “Tentative Schedule or Working Draft  -  Subject to change” in Pawprints and posted on the Kahoa website.
  • On Open House Night, either Monday, August 16th or Tuesday, August 17th  (time and date TBA) students and one family member will be allowed to ride the bus to Abbott.
  • There will a bus that picks up and delivers home students to the “Adventure Club” at the Northeast YMCA.
  • There was much more discussed than is posted here but these are the main points.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Kahoa’s very own “Hoop Shoot” winner, Noah Thompson has earned his way all the way to the Regional “Hoop Shoot” Contest!  The regional event will take place in Denver, Colorado on March 13th.  Noah has been extremely consistent competitor making 22 out of 25 baskets in all three Macintosh HD:Users:evacek:Desktop:Pictures:Clip art:images.jpgevents since the Kahoa “Hoop Shoot.”  Noah has a very supportive family that enjoys seeing him compete.  Noah enjoys the excitement and challenge of the competition(s).  If Noah can win in Denver, the National “Hoop Shoot” in Springfield, Massechusets is next.  As far as we’re concerned, Noah is already a champion, as he is a great student and friend to all at Kahoa.  We all want to wish good luck to Noah

23rd ANNUAL MAYOR’S RUN MAY 1st, 2010

The Mayors Run is fast approaching and will be benefitting the Heartland Big Brothers Big Sisters charity this year.  You can get a registration form from the Lincoln Track Club website, the March or April “Free Times” newspaper/newsletter, or your school P.E. teacher.  Entries must be turned in to Mr. Vacek by April 16th.

Parents/guardians are welcome to enter themselves on the family plan.  Please mark your birth date though so you aren’t counted in the school student participation contest.  Also, it is recommended that you run near the back of the pack so as not to distract those students who want to run fast near the start.  It’s encouraged to run with 2nd graders and under.

Packets and t-shirts will be handed out at Kahoa to each student who enters.  Runners are also eligible to win prizes such as 30 new bikes that have been donated.  Race day information; Heats will run approximately every 10-15 minutes, starting at 8:00 a.m.  Heats start with the 5-6th grade boys and finish with the 2nd grade and under girls.

Your child is allowed to run in any heat if you have something else to attend that morning and need to run earlier or later.

Students may also enter the Mayors Run t-shirt design contest.  For information on that, consult the March “Free Times” newspaper/newsletter and/or your school art teacher.
